PAUL CHALEFF
-
Paul Chaleff is one of the great ceramic artists of the United States and has exhibited widely in both Europe and Asia. He is immensely talented in a field that is difficult to master- ceramic artists not only need to be artists but also geologists, engineers, pyrotechnicians, and historians, all of which Chaleff encompasses. Honing his skill with a lineage of masters as a studio apprentice to Anthony Caro and Henry Moore, Chael’s first acquisition was to MOMA in NYC.
Known for his vessel-like forms which referred to a modern subject looking back at ancient traditions, Chaleff integrated implements from the industrial age which included the faceted cauldron, the gear, and the auger as basic forms. He incorporated classical pottery forms as internal structures, developing the concept of the potter and sculptor creating as one entity with dual modalities. To break away from the confinements of the vessel, he internalized the concept into his work, using it as an internal structural armature over which to create sculpture. Through the evolution of his ceramics practice into what is now undeniably sculptural, Chaleff’s work reminds the viewer of the internal life of a sculpture, allowing a voyeuristic experience of an object's secret life and hidden spaces.
His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, Renwick Gallery, National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, Princeton Art Museum, Princeton, NJ, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, Amore Pacific Museum of Art - Gyeonggi, South Korea.
