SEUNG WON SUH

Invariably titling his works Simultaneity, Seung-Won Suh (b. 1941) has consistently explored the theme of duality for more than 50 years. According to the artist, “simultaneity enables the unseen to be seen, ensuring that what is happening in the world of nirvana or ‘beyond dark’ could be represented through me.” Around 1990 the rigid geometric forms found in his previous work began to disappear, creating new depths of space composed of smoothly overlapping rectangular forms. This new approach expanded on the artist’s exploration of visible and invisible reality by creating canvases which from a distance appear monotone but on closer examination are revealed to be composed of a variety of colors. Suh approaches his work through a meditative process, viewing his paintings are a crystallization of aesthetic consciousness. “Color embedded in my paintings are the ones containing bland spirits bleached by the state of colors being filtered instead of the colors per se. Through abstinent work, the aesthetic consciousness has been escalated into my spirit and my spirituality on Korea’s exclusive ‘grudge’.”
