GWANG HEE JEONG

  • Gwang Hee Jeong (b. 1967) draws no distinction between calligraphy and painting. In his practice Jeong strives to achieve a true emptiness to separate from an obsession over form and object in a world of material affluence and to express nonexistent scenes and sites such as a mother’s empty heart.

Jeong’s works are created through a process of folding strips of hanji (traditional Korean paper) into rectangular forms using thin, long pieces of plywood and them assembling the paper forms side by side to construct one large canvas. Often the sheets of hanji are sourced from ancient books. resulting in works of art enfolded with concealed knowledge.

Drawing on his calligraphic and Korean painting background, Jeong often adds large brushstrokes or dots of ink to these textured canvases, blurring the boundaries between text, images and form. Through his process of emptying objects of meaning, the artist seeks to allow a freedom from perception, enabling the invisible to be revealed through the visible.
